This paper presents a mathematical model for simulation of a diesel driven synchronous machine unit. This model is developed for the marine generator system, incorporating diesel engine, governor, synchronous generator and automatic excitation system. It is also shown, on the assumption that magnetic saturation arises in the generator principally from the resultant direct axis current, how the corresponding nonlinearity is included in the model. The transient performance of current, voltage, electromagnetic torque and angular velocity in short circuit condition or in various types of switching operational conditions may be predicted. A numerical example is given, and the computed results are presented.
