The combined cycle engine is now the center of attraction for energy saving technologies and many marine engineers have been making enormous efforts for developing a viable one. IHI is assigned to study and develop a gas turbine combined cycle propulsion plant and designed a pilot plan using IHI-IM2500 as a basic cycle and intended for LNG carrier to study the feasibility of thermal efficiency improvement at a service speed. This paper deals with the overall performance of the prototype combined cycle propulsion plant, performance analysis of its bottoming cycle, and a conceptual design of major system components. The engineering results showed that this combined cycle propulsion plant will improve the gas turbine efficiency by no less than 50 %.
