EL series engines are new models aiming at reduction of fuel consumption in accordance with the result of technological development and test utilizing the features of directly coupled low speed trunk piston four-stroke type. Their fuel consumption is reduced by 11 % approximately as compared with that of conventional engines of the same class due to the various techniques such as long stroke as twice of cylinder bore, high cylinder pressure, high pressure fuel injection system and so on. As a result, it shows, in case of large model of 3309 kW such a low fuel consumption ratio as 184 g/kWh (in fuel having low calorific value of 10,200 kcal/kg). Such low speed engines enable the larger, slower turning propeller to be employed for enhanced propulsive efficiency. The paper includes the various measures taken for improvement of fuel consumption of EL series engines.
