For many years the Canadian and American Railways have been studying, testing and in some cases using alternative diesel locomotive fuels. Past and expected future fuel price changes have accelerated the process resulting in extensive work with Tar Sands distillates, low cetane Furnace Oil, and distillate blended with Bunker C residual fuel. The use of a locomotive hot-well preheating system has overcome restrictions due to the wax in high Cloud Point fuels. Low cetane distillates have been widely used in Canada without any observable effect on engine operation or maintenance. Bunker C blends have presented difficulties in pumping, filtration, compatibility and most severely in combustion at IDLE and low power. Currently work is continuing to overcome the combustion problem with the hope of raising the percentage of Bunker used in blends for even greater economies. Service testing with blends has not yet continued for a sufficient time to quantitatively identify the cost of increased maintenance.
