A new hydraulic reaction turbine was designed to recover the power available in the high-pressure wastebrine stream of reverse osmosis desalination systems. A reaction turbine sized for reverse osmosis systems producing 600 gph was built and tested. The turbine performed well driving either a variable-speed pump or an electrical generator. Measured turbine efficiency (shaft power divided by available power) was 63 %, compared with a prediction of 67 %. The turbine can be built with larger capacity to reduce the size, weight and power consumption of reverse osmosis desalination systems. Efficiency of larger units is predicted to lie in the range of 65 to 70 %.
