The quality of crude oil feedstocks available in Canada is expected to change considerably in the next decade. Feedstock will include more synthetic tar derived crudes, which are higher crudes. A reference diesel fuel for the 1990 has been developed and used in several medium and high speed engines. No major operational difficulties were experienced. In addition to crude supply and quality problems the gasoline to distillate ratio in refineries is being reduced due to conversation, substitution and dieselization of small trucks and cars. Development of alternatives to diesel are being developed. Canada's programs for using propane, natural gas, methanol, ethanol and canola oil are discussed.
