This paper represents an overview of the stress analysis work done on different heater head designs during the Automotive Stirling Engine program. A close interaction between design and analysis has resulted in successive design improvements, which are discussed here. The input requirements for stress analysis of a heater head include design, loading conditions, material data, analysis method and stress criteria. The paper describes how each one of these areas has been developed during the program. Experienced structural integrity problems on the heater head components are discussed and solutions for these problems are suggested. The paper completes by looking at future plans concerning the stress analysis of heater heads.
