The Automotive Stirling Engine (ASE) Development Program has been funded by DOE/NASA-Lewis Research center since March 1978. To date, four first-generation automotive Stirling engines (called Mod I) have accumulated more than 3667 test hours. Two additional engines will be assembled and delivered to General Motors and John Deere for test and evaluation in 1984. The Reference Engine System Design (RESD), the engine design that most closely meets the overall program objectives, was modified in 1983 to reduce manufacturing cost while maintaining engine/vehicle performance. The revised RESD is projected to achieve an increase in specific power and a reduction in specific volume and manufacturing cost. Predictions indicate that fuel economy 48.5 % above that of a comparable internal-combustion engine/vehicle installation has been attained. Two Mod I engines have been retrofitted with upgraded hardware to demonstrate design concepts embodied in the RESD. These upgraded engines have accumulated more than 325 test hours.
