This paper outlines the procedures adopted for reliability improvement and life development of the propulsion plant and ship systems in RN nuclear submarines, and how this role is complemented through the setting up, operation and application of upkeep data systems. To put this in context, the overall RN reliability and maintenance programme for nuclear submarines is outlined. The objective of this effort includes: reducing the upkeep support burden in the current nuclear submarine fleet by highlighting and detailing the causes of those defects and life limiting features which contribute most to that burden, providing designers of propulsion plant and ship systems in future nuclear submarine classes with information on the lessons learned from design deficiences which have adversely affected the operation, maintainability, reliability and upkeep support costs of the current boats.
