Recent development work with high duty single mechanical seals has demonstrated that significant improvements in their ability to contain high and variable pressures can be achieved by changes to the sealing face geometry. An extension of this work has also led to the design of high duty double mechanical selas which can safely handle the considerable reverse pressures that invariably arise with the loss of barrier fluid pressure.
