After a short background introduction, the paper describes developments and changes in naval desalination practice and knowledge over the last fifteen years. It concludes that thermal distillation is sufficiently explored, but that reverse osmosis techniques now have the potential and economic incentive to be developed and applied in most areas of naval desalination interest. Reverse Osmosis now appears to have reached a point in membrane development and manufacturing technique which is ripe for exploitation into every facet of the naval desalination requirement, including life boat equipment, submarines, gas turbine ships and perhaps in the future steam propelled vessels as well. The advantages in simplicity and ease of installation are available in addition to those of fuel economy.
