The development of a high performance active motion limiter for bow-suspended devices on a naval research vessel is described. Performance predicted from analogue computer modelling is compared with measurements taken during sea acceptance trials. Among other applications which are foreseen for this type of active hydro-pneumatic motion compensator are: diving bell handling, launching and recovery of manned and unmanned submersibles and free divers, accurate placement of bodies on the sea-bed, and locking-in and removal of assemblies to and from fixed structures on the sea-bed.
