Analogue modelling has been used in the study of ship-to-ship load transfer systems, but it is scarcely practicable to investigate in this way the motions of the ships, sea surface and load in a realistically modelled seaway. A method of predicting the motions by linear analysis is described, and illustrated by an example of its application. The method described permits investigation of the performance of load transfer systems with realistically modelled ship motions. Computations can be performed on a small computer, and the short set-up and run times permit the investigation of many more operating conditions than is feasible with analogue or digital simulation methods.
