The paper discusses the design of the Paxman Valenta diesel engine to meet Naval requirements for marine propulsion in high speed craft, larger surface vessels, submarines and power generation. Some of the problems associated with these applications are discussed and solutions put forward. The diesel engine is still capable of further increases in output and improvements in efficiency but these must be achieved without prejudice to reliability and ease of maintenance. The efficiency of the diesel engine is hard to beat by other forms of prime mover and this ensures a continuing use in Naval applications.
