Tip vortex cavitation is known as a source of radiated noise from marine propellers, even when not affecting the propulsor's efficiency. This noise can be attributed to growth and collapse of captured bubbles as well as to the dynamics of the vortex cavity itself. This second contribution to radiated noise is investigated from theoretical and experimental point of view. In a first step, the pressure field induced by the radial deformations of a cylindrical cavity is analyzed. When the propeller operates in a non-uniform velocity field, the periodic variations of the initial circulation induce cavity surface vibrations. The cavity wall motions are calculated by means of a model including the non condensable gas pressure. The velocity potential of the propeller cavitating vortex system is derived with emphasis on the far field potential. The equipment for noise measurements and signal processing is presented with some experimental results concerning propeller's tip vortex noise in uniform and non uniform flows.
