Safety research needs for gas utilization were identified on the basis of the following completed tasks: review of historical accident data, analysis of the hazards of the common elements of existing and developing gas appliances, fault tree analysis of the events leading up to major accidents, review of appliance standards and certification procedures, and discussions with gas utility people. Accident analysis reports were obtained from the Consumer Product Safety Commission NEISS and in-depth investigation data bases, accident reports from two gas utilities, and data bases of the DOT/MTB, NFPA and NSC. Historical accident data and appliance inventory data were used to derive estimates of the annual probability of incidents involving appliances and their common elements. (Kursetz)
