The lift air supply of an ACV must be viewed as an aerodynamic system, not simply as a fan in isolation. It consists of an intake, whose performance affects and is affected by the external aerodynamics of the vehicle and its relative wind and spray environment. The air then enters the impeller, usually centrifugal, whose characteristics (steady-state and dynamic) are vital to the performance and stability of the vehicle. Air from the impeller is then led to the cushion and skirt of the vehicle, and the ducting used to do this presents many difficult problems. The orthodox fan scroll is not necessarily appropriate to this situation, and various alternatives possible under the constraints of vehicle design are discussed. Finally, the overall stability and efficiency of the air system are discussed.
