Two alternatives to using gasoline as a transportation fuel are investigated. Compressed natural gas seems to be a near-term alternative. The present ratio of proven reserves to annual production indicates a 21 year supply, and in the past, proven reserves have increased faster than consumption. Electrically driven vehicles are another alternative to gasoline at least in the urban transportation mix. Technological breakthroughs are required before the electric vehicle can be economically viable.
