A floating natural gas liquefaction plant for the exploitation of marginal offshore gas deposits has been designed, calculated and partly model tested. The system is characterized by following main components: Natural gas liquefaction plant (mounted on a floating tension leg anchored platform), floating LNG storage and loading platform, transfersystem for LNG and return gas between process platform and storage platform, and feed gas pipeline connecting the LNG process plant to the central production platform. Main advantages of the system: Compared with conventional fixed platform/pipeline concepts, building cost is lower and almost indepedant of the water-depth, no foundation problems, excellent motion characteristics guaranteeing a minimum of non-operating time even under northern North Sea conditions, the system is mobile and can exploit successively several smaller fields, the floating LNG plant can be constructed and equipped completely in industrialized areas and would then be towed to location, thus saving time and money for difficult and expensive offshore work.
