The paper describes the evolution of a c Computer Aided Engineering Design System - CABEDS, specifically for the preliminary design of offshore structures. The range of platform design groups and within each group the range of geometries involved, makes impossible any concept of a single computer program to achieve a design optimisation. Efforts must be concentrated on writing each section of the mathematical model in the most general form possible so that it can apply to a wide range of geometries or physical environment and to arrange suitable interfaces between programs and between computers since it is unlikely that any one organisation will have an 'in house' capability for all the problems to be encountered. The system described has such a flexible structure and has been developed in co-operation with the offshore industry.
