The need for guidance and control of an unmanned untethered underwater automation calls for a knowledge-based expert as pilot. This paper considers the expert system in a time-constrained environment. It concludes that substantial improvements in reliability, in performance of the mission, in coping with unexpected events should be achievable with on-board microcomputer capabilities.
