The cosmetic corrosion of the outer panel coating due to stone chips in a 'salt-damage' area presents a difficult problem in determining the corrosion resistance of an automobile. Although there have been previous attempts, a definite method for evaluating chipping corrosion which approximates actual conditions has not yet been developed. Therefore, we have developed a new evaluation method to solve these problems. This test method is to shoot diamond crystals against the outer panel coating by compressed air at a velocity corresponding with the velocity of actual chips, and then to evaluate the chipping resistance of the coating from the collision speed and the depth of the damage incurred. We have conducted tests on the outer panel coating of actual vehicles, and in comparison with the test results, our diamond shot method has proved to have outstanding market reproducibility and accuracy in a quantitative evaluation.
