Public concern, with the deterioration of the quality of the environment caused by air, water, and noise pollution, became a major public issue during the 1960s, resulting in the passage of new legislation and institutional changes in the United States. This concern was not limited to the United States, but also made itself felt with similar intensity in most of the other industrialized nations. One consequence was a renewed interest in the use of electric power for propulsion with reduced pollutant emissions and noise levels as a substitute for the internal combustion engine. Because of its effect on the urban environment and its visibility, the transit bus became a prime target for conversion to electric propulsion, particularly through the use of the electric storage battery. In general, electric power is now an attractive alternative to the use of petroleum-based fuels in urban transportation.
