After having discussed the main demands on the transmission, a mechanical multi-stage powershift (PDK - Porsche-double-clutch) transmission is presented. The basic principle and possible operations modes (semi-automatic and fully automatic configuration) are explained. The most essential advantages are high efficiency, multi-stage capability, good adaptability of gear ratios, identical components with the conventional manual gear box, low eight and dimensions. The influence of gear number and spread on fuel consumption and driving performances is illustrated and compared to conventional manual and automatic torque transmissions, followed by an explanation of the automatic control device. The transmission concept presented is considered as an alternative to actual automatic torque converter gear boxes.
