A study was conducted to find the effects of yaw and lateral acceleration responses on a driver-vehicle system. An experimental vehicle that can independently vary in its yaw velocity and lateral acceleration responses was used in this study. Two types of closed-loop tests, simulating evasive manoeuvre, and normal driving respectively, were carried out on a drum-type lateral motion simulator. In addition, two different methods were adopted for supplying information to drivers during the tests. One of them places greater emphasis on the lateral position of the vehicle's center of gravity, and the other attaches greater importance to the vehicle heading. Through these tests, it was found that advances in the phases of yaw velocity and lateral acceleration work independently of each other to improve the performance of a driver-vehicle system. Another important finding is that control during normal driving is largely affected by yaw response, while evasive manoeuvre is affected by lateral acceleration response to a great extent.
