This program was a study to develop and optimize an ultrasonic weld bonding procedure for the fabrication of primary structural components for helicopters. This procedure,a combination of ultrasonic welding and adhesive bonding, was studied through a series of coupon tests. Various adhesives and surface treatments were evaluated with regard to their adaptability of ultrasonic weld bonding. Adhesive bond quality and weld quality were evaluated through various T-shear, fatigue, and environmental salt-spray tests. Environmental degradation of the adhesively borided areas occurred consistently and could not be resolved. It was determined that the surface condition required for good adhesive bonding was not compatible with that required for good ultrasonic welding and the program was terminated. (Author)
