A new friction material test machine (LST) and test procedure to characterize the performance of friction materials in terms of pressure, speed and surface temperatures are presented. Representative test results are shown and discussed as to their possible effect on truck brake performance. The LST friction test method provides lining surface temperature measurement for more accurate parameter characterization. The test procedure presented evaluates the full spectrum of velocity, pressure and surface temperature encountered in service by heavy duty truck drum brakes. Dynamometer test procedures may not encounter important parametric combinations which affect brake performance, lining service life and brake reliability.
