The paper discusses the problems of obtaining satisfactory brake system performance on commercial vehicles within the range of 5-13 tonnes G.V.M. two axle rigids. Modern drum brake design is reviewed, highlighting the limitation such systems have. The vehicle package has to be considered very carefully in that smaller wheels are demanded by the operator, maximum axle rationalisation by the vehicle manufacturer leaving little room for a satisfactory matching of vehicle and brake units. This situation has led to a reappraisal of conventional caliper design and the development of a novel approach in solving these problems in the form of a twin pin slider caliper.
