Castings are very widely used for critical friction and wear applications in automobile engines. Operating conditions are becoming more arduous and greater demands will be placed upon the casting industry to meet the requirements of the designer. Wear is mainly responsible for the general degradation of component surfaces which affectsth e component performance. Wear mechanisms in the engine are briefly reviewed in terms of the importance of abrasion adhesion and chemical wear processes. The more important alloys used for rings, liners, cams and tappets are either cast irons or steels and a wide range of surface treatments are applied to extend their service life. Composition and microstructure and preparation and application of surface treatments must be very carefully optimised and controlled to obtain the best out of these critical components.
