The part-time four-wheel-drive system, which requires a manual shift into two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, is widely used for off-road vehicles. Since the part-time four-wheel-drive connects the front and rear drive line directly, tractive capability, braking performance and other characteristics of the vehicle are often influenced by tire-to-road contact conditions. Especially, on a dry paved road which has high friction tire-to-road coefficient of friction, the influence becomes clearly apparent, so some restrictions on the part-time four-wheel-drive are usually recommended. This paper reviews the mechanism of the part-time four-wheel-drive on a high-friction paved road. It analyzes the tractive capability and braking performance
