Of necessity, there is worldwide interest in making transport fuels from sources other than crude petroleum. However, because of the large tonnages and the considerable difficulties involved, most work has been done on developing alternative fuels for use in petrol engines. Fuels for diesel engines have revieved much less attention. This paper deals with the ways in which diesel fuels for railway engines might be made from coal and some of the technical problems encountered in making fuel might be made from other natural resources, e.g. tar sands, biomass, etc., and some of the properties of the less orthodox fuels are given. It is also suggested that diesel engines might be modified so as to accommodate alternative fuels more readily.
