There is a finite future for the diesel engine in rail traction, as the fossil fuel crisis deepens and the railway authorities of the world move to electrification. The diesel engine however, has an important role to fulfil over the next two decades at least, as life expired stock has to be replaced. The user requirement for future diesel engines is improved fuel consumption, increased reliability and longer periods between overhaul in order that both operating costs and availability can be improved. It is believed that with the introduction of computer aided design techniques, these aims can be achieved.
