The current need to provide the automotive industry with light compact diesel engines has led an Italian Group of Diesel Manufacturing Companies to develop a new series of high speed engines meeting the requirements of automotive industry and suitable for a wide range of other applications. Its experience in modular construction and manufacturing technique resulted in a non-conventional design allowing planned progress in fuel economy, specific outputs and emission level. The paper underlines some design aspects relating to the engine architecture and the logic of the modular concept. Comparative results obtained with 3-, 4-, 5-, and 6-cylinder models are also discussed.
