One of the effects of rising oil prices is seen in the trend toward small Diesel cars. To ensure reasonable performance and excellent fuel economy, the axle and gear ratios must be carefully selected. This paper discusses a Powertrain Matching Technique which has been applied to a new small Diesel engine being developed from an existing gasoline engine. Vehicle performance and economy are simulated by computer, and the transmission ratios which correspond to optimum homologated fuel economy, while maintaining accpetable performance criteria, are determined using a dynamic optimisation program.
