The Detroit Diesel Allison and Pontiac Divisions of General Motors are developing the advanced technologies needed to make the gas turbine a viable alternative to the spark ignition and diesel engines of the future. To compete with these engines, goals have been established for fuel economy, emissions, and production cost that could make the gas turbine more than competitive with the most advanced piston engines projected for the 1990s. The key technologies are small-scale aerothermodynamics and high-temperature structural ceramics, which will be incorporated into a proof-of-concept demonstrator, the AGT 100. Although extensive work is still required, component rig tests, ceramics development, and cost studies are encouraging. Indications are that the goals initially set for this project are well conceived, timely, and attainable, if the ceramic development continues at the current pace. (Wassmann)
