The proposed FOTEC concept is for a 40 megawatt floating pilot plant OTEC platform moored in the Florida Straits in water approximately 3.000 feet deep. The platform is essentially a barge, long and slender in shape to minimize mooring loads, which houses four power modules, each producing a net output of 10 MW. Power is transmitted from the platform to the onshore electrical substation by subsea cable which includes a riser cable from the ocean bottom to a buoy and then to the moored power plant platform. The electrical substation is part of the inter Florida Key transmission line to Miami being constructed by the CES and will be modified to accommodate the OTEC cable connection and necessary power conditioning equipment.
