Application of an active fluid system to spacecraft temperature control is discussed. An analysis of the thermal interaction between the coolant and a heat pipe radiator is formulated in terms of coolant header geometry, flow characteristics, heat transport coefficients, and radiator thermal properties. A simplified mathematical approach is outlined for the solution of the equations of energy and fluid flow, and the analysis is validated by comparison with the results of a multi-mode finite element computer model. Numerical examples are given to illustrate application to preliminary design studies. (Wassmann)
