Recently, with the expansion joint of the ballast pipeline in the cargo tank or cargo pipeline on the upper deck of tankers, the offset-bend structure has gained much popularity instead of sliding expansion joint to precent oil leakage and consequent contamination of sea water. With regard to the strength characteristics of the bent pipe which is an important component of a piping system, a lot of studies have been reported and also applied to the design of nuclear or chemical plants. On the other hand, a minute design standard has not been established fully yet in the ship design field. Further, considering the peculiar loading condition which affects the bent part of the offset-bend of a tanker from continuous bending by the wave bending moment, it is very important to establish the design basis with the adequate evaluation of the strength characteristics of the bent pipe to prevent fatigue failure. From these points of view, the authors studied the design standard of off-set-bend for tankers by means of a model test and measurement on an actual ship. (Wassmann)
