An 18000 PS class IM 2000 marine gas turbine has been developed. IM 2000 is used as the main engine for the COGAG propulsion plant with one kind of gas turbine. The IM 2000 gas turbine is combined with the experienced GE aircraft derivative type LM 2500 gas generator and IHI three stage duty type power turbine. In the design stage, much attention was paid to improve efficiency at part load in cruise operation. The gas turbine is contained in the gas turbine module with the base plate, enclosure and accessory equipment as a self-sustained power unit. Land based tests were conducted, coupled with a water brake dynamometer, and it demonstrated 30 percent better specific fuel consumption and lower noise level compared with conventional gas turbine together with high reliability and durability. Excellent part load efficiency was also proven. This gas turbine was intended primarily for application to a four engine two shaft COGAG system and the machinery arrangement for such a system was studied. The IM 2000 gas turbine is the only existing 18000 PS class second generation marine gas turbine. (Wassmann)
