High pressure reinjection of natural gas which is increasingly applied to recover such a valuable energy source. Reciprocating compressors are an adequate solution for this heavy service provided that a thorough thermodynamic study of the hydrocarbon mixture to be compressed is performed in order to achieve proper control of the dew point along the compression path, thereby limiting the harmful diluting effect of the gas handled on the cylinder lubricant. Particular pains must be taken with lubrication, friction heat removal and fatigue stresses in the cylinder design of these compressors. In the case of off-shore installation, special emphasis must be laid upon compressor balancing and packaging. (Wassmann)
