Discussion of the development of a novel mechanical continuously variable-ratio transmission which has the power density required for highway vehicles. The concept, design and advantages of the new CVT are presented along with the results of an experimental study of the prototype transmission's performance. The overall efficiency of the transmission is high; it was measured to be 94 % at rated power. (Wassmann)
