A major problem with disc brake passenger cars designed for high retardation rates is the amount of wheel slide and wheel spalling incurred. The overlay of a tread brake system to the existing disc brake system has shown a significant reduction in the amount of wheel tread damage and a corresponding increase in wheel life. Amtrak has performed a series of stop distance and revenue service evaluation on a dual brake system and comparative results are given. (Wassmann)
