The high capacity 36-Axle Schnabel Rail Car recently delivered to Combustion Engineering, Inc. (C-E), is traced from initial inception through delivery. The Schnabel Car carries its load suspended between two halves, which allows delivery of certain oversized and overweight components normally restricted to other modes of transportation. The paper discusses the development of design requirements, specification, procurement, testing, and unique features of the car. It was manufactured by Krupp Industrie und Stahlbau of West Germany and is the largest in the world. (Wassmann)
