The surplus electricity of nuclear power stations during off-peak periods can be used to produce H2 by electrolysis. It is proposed that the large amount of H2 produced can be stored in flexible containers under the sea. The advantages are two-fold: being able to utilize the water pressure to counter balance the gas pressure, and being able to resist the pressure difference efficiently by membrane stresses only. Structural analysis shows that the stresses induced butyl rubber. Problems of sea current, anchorage and construction of such a container are discussed. (Puschmann)
