Field maintenance and repair costs are a major part of total operating costs on off-highway equipment. Ease of maintenance must be considered very early in the design process and re-evaluated as the design matures. Specific suggestions for product design criteria cover power train, electrical and hydraulic systems as well as lubrication and periodic maintenance items such as filters and lubricant changes. Current design approaches are discussed and preferred designs are identified. (Wassmann)
