Faced with serious gearing problems in steam turbine driven VLCC, an extensive measurements program, covering all external influences on the gears, was carried out in order to pinpoint possible causes. One obvious external influence stems from the shaft line and the objectives of a rational static shaft alignment are discussed in the paper. For checking the final result on board, a new electronic instrument giving high accuracy is described. Dynamic measurements on bull wheel journals show substantial misalignment and movements which do not comply with bearing theories, but support earlier measurements by others. By means of geometry these movements can be correlated with tooth load distribution. However, strain measurements on the teeth show no influence of journal movements on tooth load distribution. Therefore it is concluded that, for satisfactory gearing performance, a proper shaft line alignment is much less critical than had previously been thought. For ships gears other load increasing phenomena occur, amongst which are axial vibrations. Some measurements results are given, and within the readings taken to date no excessive external factors have been found. (Wassmann)
