The concept of utilizing computers to monitor and diagnose aircraft engine operating health is relatively recent. One of the first of these systems to be developed for the military environment was the Inflight Engine Condition Monitoring System (IECMS) developed for the US Navy A7-E Attack aircraft. This system has progressed through several stages of development and is currently operational in 2 Attack Squadrons. Continued system development is planned to expand capabilities and increase overall cost effectiveness. (Wassmann)
