Among the remarkable advances in engineering this century that of the aeroplane is unsurpassed. Increases in its size, speed, sophistication and safety have been immense. Vital to a modern aircraft is the braking system which, in the 1980's as in the 1920's, r3lies on the useful application of friction. This paper traces development of the aircraft brake, explaining its task and the design considerations of the friction elements. Factors affecting brake performance and friction material selection are covered including recent lightweight materials. Reference is made to the role of the tyre and skid control and to the testing of such equipment in the laboratory. (Wassmann)
