The 'bursting' of leading edge laminar separation bubbles that can occur on moderately thick airfoil sections is the cause of sudden large increases in drag, decrease of lift, and change in pitching moment associated with abrupt stall at high angles of attack. This paper describes a semiempirical theory for the description and calculation of the development and bursting of laminar separation bubbles. The semiempirical theory uses an experimental correlation to relate the length of the laminar free shear layer to the freestream turbulence and a modified version of Hortons method to calculate the properties and reattachment position of the turbulent shear layer. The method is used to predict the development of laminar separation bubbles for NACA airfoils. Comparison of these results with NACA experiments shows good agreement. (Kursetz)
