This paper describes the development of a hydraulically powered diver-held work tool designed for performing undersea tasks including hammering, chipping, scraping, punching, and cutting. The tool's features include a hydroelastic spring for impact-stroke energy, a configuration which eliminates flow in the supply and return lines during the impact stroke, and a control approach which provides operator selection of either single-blow or continuous-cycling operation. The functional operation, design, and results of initial prototype evaluations are covered. (Wassmann)
